Last evening, over cinnamon speckled chais and a table stacked with camera lenses and Kinfolk journals, my friend Aubrie and I discussed the frustrations of life with (or without!) code. And how sometimes we just want-- after tears and hours of following code directions to no avail-- to fork over the money to an HTML expert to solve our first world problems for us. (smile) We concluded that would only leave us with lighter wallets and still no know-how. It was at that point in the conversation that I leaned over to Aubrie and said, probably with wild eyes and high-pitched excitement, 'I figured something out! I know how to make my own Bloglovin' button!'
And, on the heels of the blog-shattering news of Google Reader + Google Friend Connect going bye-bye, I'd like to share my knowledge with you just in case you, like me, aren't crazy about the standard Bloglovin' buttons. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create a banner-type button. But keep in mind you can use any image, overlay, geometric pattern, etc. to create your own Bloglovin' button. Also, this tutorial is meant for those using a Blogger platform, but I think many of the concepts are transferable to other blog hosts. Ready? Here we go!
// Head over to PicMonkey and upload your image, or in my case, a white square! (I simply opened up a blank document in Word and snapped a screenshot.) Next, crop your image to the appropriate size for your blog. (My sidebar allows my image to be 300 megapixels wide and I only wanted it 30 megapixels high.) //
// Next, add the banner overlay and choose your desired color //
// Add your text and save your work! //
// Now, click over to www.bloglovin.com and find your blog via the search box. Here's the MOST IMPORTANT PART of this tutorial: Do you see the bloglovin' identification number for my blog in the orange bubble in the picture above? Find yours and copy and paste the entire url. //
// Now go to your blogger dashboard and click on 'layout'. Next, click on 'add a gadget'. Then, click on 'image'. //
// Upload your saved PicMonkey image and paste your Bloglovin' ID code in the LINK box. //
// All finished! Enjoy your customized Bloglovin' button! //
p.s. Remember my talented friend Aubrie that I talked about? Please go to this post and look at the newborn that she recently photographed. The photographs of sweet Kate with her doggie? Oh my goodness! You will seriously smile so big it isn't even funny. Actually, you will laugh out loud and be so happy you did! Happy almost-end-of-the-week, friends!
