I don't know in what stage life finds you right now, but for me, as a mama to two young boys, life finds me in a busy, little-time-for-creativity stage. But here's something that I've been really thinking on lately: you find time for what you love. And so, yesterday, as I tiredly poured myself a second cup of chai, I pulled out my calligraphy pen and set to work. It wasn't long before a little hand found it's way across my writing table and stole my pencil. Can I tell you how happy I was to have already been clicking away on the camera and to catch my Graeme-bear in action?
Beautiful pictures and excellent quotes are gifts that can be appreciated over and over again. How happy I am to unite the two for this third of twelve Heart Art projects. This third installation of Heart Art really began on a summer night of last year, although I had no idea. On that warm August evening, I was given a complete gift: a dozen or so pictures with my boys, taken by my husband. I got a little teary contemplating how much they've grown since last summer. (I also take no responsibility for my outfit that evening. Peach pants and a pink shirt? I wish I could lie and say this picture is from 1980. Heavens to Betsy.)
Fast forward, from 1980 (smirk), to this past week, when I sat thinking about what I really wanted to put my time into for this third installation of Heart Art. What had really stopped me in my tracks lately? Oh yes. I knew. It was this quote by Helen Keller: I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble. Then, a couple of evenings ago, as Steve sat completely mesmerized by his reading of Wildwood, I rattled on and on about the possibility of adding calligraphy to a photograph. And I remembered these pictures from August and that I had quickly snapped a couple of pictures of the landscape in between Steve's shots. Would it work?
It turns out, it certainly did.
p.s. The picture above, of Ann Sullivan and Helen Keller is absolutely amazing to me. Amazing.
p.s.s This piece of Heart Art will be available in my Etsy shop by the end of the week. The prints are $12.95 + shipping.
